This is a good quality set. It is easy to assemble and get started, and the pieces, especially the locomotive, feel durable. I only have two "beefs" with it. First, with just the oval track, it gets boring quite quickly, just watching go round and round. It would have been nice if the starter set included some scenery accessories, alternative track configurations, etc. to "liven it up." Second, the directions are pretty vague and not comprehensive. Good luck trying to figure out how to dump out the coal from the coal box. Even though they talk about it, the description refers to buttons out of the blue without context so you can't figure out what they are saying.
It's a solid buy, but you'll need to quickly follow up with more track and accessories to keep you kids interested.

This train set is awesome! The train sounds are so realistic! I bought this set for my 4 year old son for Christmas. He was so excited, we set it up immeadiatley and he plays with it constantly. This toy is very well made ,however, the coupler on the tender wasn't working. I had no problems getting it fixed with the warranty through lionel and they're customer service was awesome, they still are an American company even though their trains are made in China(still the same quality as their classic Amercan made counterparts). They truely stand by their product, and customer satisfaction is clearly a priority.
The recommended age for this toy is 12, however, it is totaly appropriate for a child age 3 and up as long as a parent plays with the child to help set it up and re-rail cars. My 4 year old had no problems operating the transformer or the uncoupler/dump car track activator. If your looking for a great classic gift that any child will have hours of fun using their imagination and developing problem solving skills this is it! Lionel has really taken a classic and made it better with technology. Parents will also have endless fun playing together with their kids. Awesome!
